Key:

Armored rifle platoon: R1 to R3 = Rifle squads; M4 = Mortar squad; MG5 = LMG Squad

Tank platoon: 1 = Platoon leader; 4 = Platoon sergeant

Air security on the march of an armored rifle platoon: machine guns are pointed to the front, right, rear and left, and each halftrack has all-round air observers. The weapons can just as easily engage ground targets.

In combat the company HQ vehicles (other than the company commander’s) would constitute the company’s rear echelon and be co-located with the battalion service company. The company CO’s halftrack is depicted in manuals leading formations, but in reality it would normally be in the center and to the rear of the formation, or behind the lead platoon, in order to see more of the formation and better control it. Other vehicles might accompany the company at times, such as the armored recovery vehicle and the armored ambulance. These might follow to the rear or be integrated into the formation, for instance between the 2d and 3d Platoons. The same applied to the antitank platoon, which is not even depicted in some manuals. For an administrative move the company headquarters vehicles would usually trail the main body of the company.
